UPDATE 1PM: It was difficult to hear details in court Thursday morning in an alleged sex ring involving several members of missing teen Brittney Wood's family.Dustin Kent, William Brownlee, Mendy Keny, Wendy Holland, James Cumbaa and Nelton Butch Morgan were in court. All are facing a variety of sex abuse charges.Prosecutors say their young witnesses are believable. Defense witnesses call their claims questionable, but it's all uncomfortable to watch and hear. Here we have a group of adults who would get together and frequently molest children, said Nicki Patterson, Assistant DA.The allegations are difficult to comprehend, even more difficult to hear in open court. So the mother of one defendant expressed outrage, and attempted to storm out.The mother of James Cumaa had just heard evidence prosecutors plan to use to prove Cumbaa and five others are part of a child sex ring. Another family member even lashed out at our camera. The judge would have none of that, and let the family know it.Prosecutors say Cumbaa was involved with a family that, prosecutors claim, were doing the unthinkable. The allegations here is that this was a group of family and friends who passed their children back and forth. These children are related to one another, and they are related to many of these people, said Patterson.Twisting the plot even further, the six are either member of or friends with the family of missing teen Brittney Wood, whose uncle Donnie Holland was found dead last year.At Thursday's preliminary hearing, prosecutors laid out a big piece of their case before a district judge, all details collected from a young teenaged girl and a preteen boy. They described the events that happened when they were as little as 7 and 9 years old, claims by the children that they were made to do obscene things with people they knew very well, claims of being delivered to locations for sex with multiple partners performing acts to selacious to mention here, most of them at a relative's house in Mobile. In the end, the judge sent all of the cases over to the Grand Jury for possible indictments, possibly leading to a trial. That's not sitting well with some of the defense attorneys, who say this entire case is based on what they consider shaky evidence. When you have any witness available to you for an extensive period of time, they can be subject to any type of interrogation that gets you the answers to the questions you want. Basically, they are subject to coercion, said John Grow, defense attorney.Still others scrabled to distance thier client from the case.Mr. Morgan is not part of this family. He's not in some ring with anybody. He happened to be a friend with Donnie back when they werein high school, Donald Briskman, defense attorney.I can only speak to the allegations against Mr. Cumbaa and they are basically unsubstantiated. The are one of a litany of complaints and allegations this young lady has made that did not surface until very late in the investigation, said Cumbaa's attorney Jeff Dean.A total of 11 people have been arrested in this case, spanning both Mobile and Baldwin counties. All of the arrests have some tie to Brittney Wood. While this sex abuse investigation is going on, they search is still on for Brittney Wood. She disappeared in May of 2012, and hasn't been seen since.Authorities on both sides of the bay say Brittney Wood's disappearance and the sex abuse investigation are not connected. The six people in court Thursday were all requesting lower bonds. The judge asked it be submitted for further review.PREVIOUS STORYMOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) Several suspects in a family sex child abuse ring were in court Thursday morning for a bond hearing. They are related to or connected to missing teen mom Brittney Wood.Dustin Kent, William Brownlee, Mendy Kent, Wendy Holland, James Cumbaa and Randall Wood were in court.Testimony was based on an interview on October 16 with an underage boy and girl.If any of the suspects get bond, they'll be on home confinement and be required to wear ankle monitors.Local 15's Darwin Singleton was in court Thursday morning. He will have more on Local 15 News at 5 and 6.
